Moontrek for Cancer

My name is Anthony Moon, I am 17 and I am the organiser of Moontrek along with my family & friends. I am currently in the Sixth Form at Ashby School, Leicestershire and I live with my dad, Terry Moon.

In 2007 I lost my Mum, Janice Moon to breast cancer. After battling through several months of chemotherapy and just ready to start radiotherapy, she tragically died unexpectedly. She was told a week before she died she was a 'model patient' and making an excellent recovery. My mum was suddenly struck with an infection which she was extremely vulnerable to because of the chemotherapy which reduces immunities in the patients blood. A few days later she died.

Cancer has affected my family and I greatly, which is why we wanted to set up some way to help those who are affected by this terrible disease.

Me and my brothers, Phil and Steve, sat and talked about my sister-in-law Nikki taking part in the 5km Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK. We wanted to do something ourselves, involving all our family and friends, which wasn't as strenuous as a 5km run! And so the idea of Moontrek was born. I continued with the idea, contacting Cancer Research UK; setting up this website and contacting our local papers for support. We did Moontrek 2007 attracting a lot of attention.

After many questions such as "Is there going to be another Moontrek?" and "Can I take part in next year's Moontrek?", I decided to start the ball rolling for Moontrek 2008 in January and since then, my passion and enthusiasm for raising money for this literally life-saving charity has grown and grown. I can't wait to walk the 16 miles on 10th August 2008!
