This Year I wanted to walk somewhere local at the same time as being somewhere everyone knew. I wanted to find somewhere where our walkers hadn't really trekked along before, but occasionally walked nearby. This is when I stumbled across the Ivanhoe Way (thanks to a teacher of mine). This is a 35-36 mile trail circling Ashby de la Zouch. It's a 'yellow post path' trailing through farmers fields and local villages and towns. You may have all walked sections of it, but you probably won't have walked all of it!

The Route
We walked around 16 miles for Cancer Research UK in Moontrek 2008 following the Ivanhoe Way.
We will officially started the trek at 10.00am on Sunday 10th August 2008 outside Manor Barns in the village of Snarestone. This year we followed part of the Ivanhoe Way. This is around a 35 mile circuit around Ashby de la Zouch, but we did about 16 miles of it.
We headed south east initially, trekking through the fields of Snarestone before eventually intercepting the Ashby Canal. We followed the Ashby Canal through Shakerstone, past the railway line and then headed off to Odstone and Nailstone.
When we reached Bagworth after walking through many fields during the morning, we stopped for lunch.
After around a half an hour rest, we took to the fields again, slightly late due to a longer stop at Bagworth. We headed underneath another railway line and through Bagworth Park up towards Stanton under Bardon, passing a dormant volcano (Cliffe Hill) on our right.
Eventually reaching the A511 near Markfield we crossed the road (getting a few honks!) using the pelican crossings on the roundabout.
Heading uphill slightly, we followed the Ivanhoe Way to Bardon Quarry and we pass around the blasting site (inactive anyway because it was Sunday). Keeping to the path, we trek to a small woodland area past Coalville but before entering Whitwick (south of Spring Hill) for an afternoon break.
Treking towards Whitwick and Thringstone, we climbed through Cademan Woods and to cut out the steep Dumps, we diverted around them.
We eventually reached our destination, The Gelsmoor, Coleorton at around 7:00pm (about 1h30mins late after all the little breaks we had and the very slow styles!). Everyone enjoyed themselves (he says) and crashed out at the barbeque.
